The biggest reason to get a socket preservation bone graft is if you plan on a dental implant in the future. Sometimes it isn’t necessary. Here’s a guide on how to decide whether you want a socket preservation bone graft or not.

Most often we use tiny grains of human donor bone that are cleaned and made safe; your body slowly replaces them with your own bone.
Another option is a soft, sponge-like collagen plug with calcium that melts away as new bone grows.
Both help the socket keep its shape so a future implant fits well.

What is a Socket Preservation Bone Graft?
Socket preservation is a bone graft placed into the empty tooth socket immediately after an extraction. Usually a thin collagen membrane covers the graft and the site is sealed. This helps the jaw keep its shape while new bone replaces the graft over the next few months.
Why it matters: without a bone graft, the ridge naturally shrinks which can complicate implants and compromise smile esthetics.
